After Treatment
When active orthodontic treatment is complete, a new important phase of treatment begins... Retention! We generally give all our patients removable appliances called retainers that are worn for many years to help hold that new smile. Initially they must be worn daily, and they should be maintained and worn occasionally for many years. Teeth are not in "concrete" but in living bone. They will respond to biting forces or habits and can be moved just as the orthodontic appliances moved them the first time.
The retainers should be cleaned carefully with a toothbrush and toothpaste daily. If they are broken, please bring them into the office. We may be able to repair them. If they are lost, we recommend that you have a replacement retainer made.
